On May 15, 2025, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s Cabinet approved a groundbreaking poultry initiative aimed at enhancing child nutrition while supporting Sierra Leone’s local poultry industry. The initiative will provide one locally produced egg daily to each child aged 3 to 6 years through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education’s (MBSSE) school feeding program.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Henry Musa Kpaka, emphasized the program’s dual objectives: improving children’s health and stimulating local egg production. This initiative is expected to create jobs and attract investment in the sector.
Kpaka described the initiative as integral to the broader Feed Salone agenda, which seeks to achieve food sovereignty and reduce the country’s reliance on imported foods. “Together, we will feed and nourish Sierra Leone,” he stated, underscoring the collaborative efforts necessary to address the nation’s agricultural challenges.
