Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. Moinina David Sengeh, announced significant developments regarding social media monetization during a live update to the nation’s creatives on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
In a post on his Facebook page, the Chief Minister shared the government’s commitment to supporting bloggers, content creators, influencers, musicians, and social media users in the monetization of their online activities.
Dr. Sengeh highlighted that before monetization can be fully realized, a controlled payment system must be established in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Sierra Leone. He assured stakeholders that this payment system is currently being tested and is expected to be operational by mid-March.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Innovation will play a key role in facilitating this process, with support from Starlink to aid the monetization of X (formerly Twitter).
For successful monetization, the Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of a structured approach that includes partnerships with financial institutions, improved addressing systems, and proactive policy engagement.
He reiterated the government’s dedication to capital development, stating, “The president is a listening man and is passionate about youth development.” Additionally, he urged social media users to engage responsibly, reminding them of existing laws that regulate media usage and the importance of accountability in their online activities.
