Choithram Memorial Hospital (CMH) has successfully wrapped up its fourth free reconstructive surgery camp in collaboration with INTERPLAST Germany, providing crucial medical assistance to patients throughout Sierra Leone. The two-week initiative, which took place from February 10 to 24 at the Freetown facility, focused on delivering specialized plastic and reconstructive surgeries addressing various conditions, including cleft lip and palate, post-burn contractures, and deformities affecting the hand, foot, and wrist.
The outreach program featured a dedicated team of German medical specialists, including plastic surgeons, hand surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff. Over the course of the camp, 44 patients received surgeries at no financial burden. Since the program’s inception, approximately 200 patients have benefited from these essential services.
Dr. Gowrinath M. George, the Medical Superintendent at CMH, emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative on patients’ lives, specifically in enhancing their functional capabilities and reducing disability. Patients were able to register for the program through public outreach efforts and underwent screening by hospital clinicians. CMH also assured ongoing follow-up care for patients post-surgery.
Dr. Bernd Markus Heidemann from INTERPLAST Germany commented on the complexities involved in reconstructive surgeries, particularly for children suffering from burn injuries and cleft conditions, underscoring the social and functional ramifications of these operations.
Looking ahead, Dr. George announced additional outreach initiatives, including a Colon Cancer Screening Camp set to begin on March 12 and a Cataract Surgery Camp starting March 21, both aimed at building capacity within local medical teams.
