The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) has responded to the Judiciary, labeling its recent press release dated May 23, 2025, as “false and misleading.” The Judiciary characterized CHRDI’s initial statements as malicious and self-serving.
In a follow-up press release on May 25, 2025, CHRDI reiterated allegations that the Judiciary has failed to uphold court rules, emphasizing the daily challenges faced by the public. The organization views the Judiciary’s response as an attempt to obscure the truth, noting a low public perception of its ability to deliver fair justice.
CHRDI contends that the Judiciary hinders citizens’ understanding of its operations and shortcomings, particularly regarding critical issues such as corruption. They have invited the Judiciary to provide evidence to counter their claims.
The NGO further alleged serious corruption within the Master and Registrar’s office of the High Court, including the creation of fake court orders by administrative staff, prompting an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Additionally, several judiciary staff members, including the Registrar of the Supreme Court, have been suspended over separate corruption allegations.
Concerns have also been raised about the Chief Justice’s office allegedly withdrawing cases improperly from lower courts, which would violate Section 10 of the Court Act of 1965. CHRDI criticized the recent appointment of individuals to Magistrate positions, asserting that some lacked the necessary qualifications, raising questions about the selection process.
With over 2,000 cases awaiting rulings for more than two years, CHRDI highlighted a particularly unresolved case in Bo District (CC24/2021-A) that has remained pending since 2022, underscoring issues with judicial efficiency.
In conclusion, CHRDI called on the Judiciary to be transparent with the public, retract allegations of blackmail, and engage in constructive dialogue.
