In a significant step towards decentralizing the judiciary, Chief Justice Honourable Komba Kamanda officially inaugurated the construction of the York Magistrate’s Court and High Court in the Western Rural District. This initiative aims to bring legal services closer to communities outside Freetown, addressing longstanding logistical and financial obstacles faced by residents seeking legal recourse.
During the sod-turning ceremony, Justice Kamanda highlighted the judiciary’s role as a public resource, emphasizing that justice should be accessible to all Sierra Leoneans, not just a privileged few. “I am committed to increasing access to justice for every citizen,” he asserted, addressing the gathered community in York Village.
The Chief Justice characterized the construction project as a pivotal effort to enhance the effective administration of justice across the nation. He reassured residents that the new facilities would not only reduce the burden on rural communities but also strengthen the visibility and accessibility of the judiciary for all citizens, regardless of their socio-economic status.
As the project progresses, it is anticipated to significantly improve the delivery of judicial services, aligning with the government’s commitment to equitable access to justice throughout Sierra Leone.
