Freetown, Sierra Leone – July 1, 2025 – Magistrate John Manso Fornah of Pademba Road Magistrate Court Number 2 has committed the cyberbullying case involving Mr. Sheku Tejan Rogers against Professor Philip John Kanu, Vice Chancellor and Principal of Milton Margai Technical University, to the High Court.

During the proceedings, Magistrate Fornah noted that the matter had largely been held behind closed doors and stated that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence linking the accused to the charges. The court was informed that between November 18 and November 30, 2022, the accused allegedly used social media, including posts, recordings, and text messages, to damage the character and reputation of Professor Kanu.

After thoroughly examining the evidence presented during the Preliminary Investigations (PI), the magistrate cited relevant legal sections indicating that reckless or intentional postings meant to cause harm or ill will constitute an offense. He mentioned that the accused could face fines ranging from Le30,000 to Le200,000, up to two years in prison, or both.

During the proceedings, Mr. Rogers denied the allegations and, when asked if he wanted to make a voluntary statement or provide evidence in the High Court, declined, citing security concerns.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Joan Bull represented the Inspector General of Police, while Z.A. Campbell and D. Gbla represented the accused. D. Gbla requested that media coverage of the proceedings be restricted to prevent misrepresentation, a request that was countered by Assistant Superintendent Bull, who assured that the media would report the facts accurately. Magistrate Fornah also cautioned the media to ensure accurate reporting.

The magistrate confirmed that the bail conditions for the accused would remain unchanged as the case moves forward.
