The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) wrapped up a series of District Level Sanitization Campaigns from February 2 to 5, 2026. The events took place at District Council Halls in Kambia, Kabala, Kono, and Magburaka Town.
The campaign aimed to educate stakeholders on ECOWAS programs and initiatives in Sierra Leone and the wider West African region. Participants included local authorities, security personnel, educators, students from various schools, civil society organizations, traders, and members of the physically challenged community.
ECOWAS Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Mr. John Azuma, highlighted the importance of community awareness regarding ECOWAS activities. He praised President Julius Maada Bio for the peace and stability in Sierra Leone, emphasizing that sustainable development hinges on unity and political stability.
During her remarks, MoPED Minister Madam Kenyeh Barley noted that this year marks the Golden Jubilee of ECOWAS. She urged member countries to collaborate against terrorism and reiterated ECOWAS’s mission to prioritize the welfare of its citizens. Barley also outlined the government’s “big five” initiatives, including creating 5,000 job opportunities for youth and enhancing human capital.
The campaign featured various presentations, including efforts by ECOWAS to combat regional challenges such as terrorism, cross-border crime, and insecurity. ECOWAS representatives discussed ongoing projects, including infrastructure improvements, educational support, and healthcare initiatives aimed at benefiting communities across Sierra Leone.
Participants expressed recommendations for further sensitization at the chiefdom level and committed to sharing the knowledge gained during the campaign with their communities.
