The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has announced promising advancements in electricity access and reliability across Freetown, according to a recent survey by the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) released on October 23, 2025. The findings reveal that nearly 80% of residents have observed notable improvements in the electricity supply over the past year, a testament to EDSA’s ongoing commitment to enhancing power services in the city.

The IGR survey highlights some impressive statistics: 83% of respondents from the West End reported better electricity service, while 77% in Central Freetown and 71% in the East End confirmed similar enhancements. Furthermore, 76% of those surveyed indicated that overall electricity services have strengthened, with only 12% experiencing no change and another 12% noting a decline in service quality.

Despite this encouraging progress, the report points to persistent challenges that EDSA continues to face, particularly the rising cost of electricity. This issue remains a significant concern for many residents, prompting EDSA to take proactive measures to address the situation. The authority is focusing on improving operational efficiency to reduce costs, ensuring stable voltage and reliable service, and intensifying efforts to combat power theft and illegal connections.

“We are encouraged by the positive feedback from the community and remain dedicated to providing consistent, affordable, and transparent electricity services,” said Tesman Egbe, Acting Director General of EDSA.

EDSA also expressed appreciation for the technical support and collaboration from the Ministry of Energy, which has been instrumental in achieving these advancements. The authority reassured the public of its commitment to enhancing energy access for all citizens.

In addition, EDSA thanked the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) for its dedication to evidence-based research, which plays a vital role in informing policymaking and supporting Sierra Leone’s broader energy agenda.

With these developments, EDSA aims to continue its mission of delivering reliable electricity services, ultimately contributing to the economic growth and stability of Freetown.
