Embassy Seeks Amnesty for Stranded Sierra Leoneans

The Embassy of Sierra Leone in the People’s Republic of China has formally asked Cambodian authorities for waivers and leniency on behalf of roughly 60 Sierra Leonean nationals stranded in Cambodia after their visas expired.

In a Note Verbale dated 13 March 2026 (SLE/PEK/ADMIN/NV No.53/26), the embassy requested that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Phnom Penh grant overstay waivers and issue exit visas to enable the affected citizens to regularise their departure.

The appeal follows reports that the group travelled to Cambodia after being recruited with promises of employment that failed to materialise. Sources say some of the Sierra Leoneans have been coerced to pay up to $7,000 each to secure their release.

The embassy urged Cambodian authorities not to detain or penalise the nationals for immigration overstays while waivers and exit documentation are processed, saying such measures would facilitate an orderly and voluntary return. It also pledged full cooperation with Cambodian agencies to ensure the travellers comply with immigration procedures and depart in accordance with local law.

The Note Verbale concluded by renewing the embassy’s assurances of highest consideration to the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
