Freetown, June 5, 2025 — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) organized an ecotour to the Sella Water Community in Godrich as part of World Environment Day celebrations. The initiative brought together pupils and teacher coordinators from ten schools in Freetown to examine the impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems.

During the event, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jiwoh Abdulai, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the severe threats posed by plastic waste. “Plastic endangers marine life and disrupts food webs and livelihoods, especially in coastal regions,” he stated. Minister Abdulai underscored the urgent need for enhanced waste management practices, revealing that only 9% of plastic produced is recycled.

He called for the development and enforcement of waste management regulations, improved waste management facilities, and increased investment in recycling initiatives. “Sustainable projects go hand in hand with sustainable practices, and effectively handling and disposing of plastic waste is one way to tackle plastic pollution,” he added.

The tour included a visit to local mangroves, which have been significantly impacted by plastic waste, illustrating the environmental challenges faced by the community. The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing students to share their insights and reflections on the experience.
