The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) of Sierra Leone is intensifying its commitment to responsible mining by implementing stricter regulations concerning mine rehabilitation and closure. This initiative was discussed in the latest episode of the agency’s public awareness series, EPA Unpacked.
In Episode 7, Mr. Paul Lamin, Director of Natural Resources Governance, and Mr. Tamba Sangbah Esq., Director of Legal Affairs, outlined the new requirements for both major and small-scale mining operations. These companies are now mandated to develop and secure approval for site rehabilitation plans as a prerequisite for their mining activities.
A significant aspect of this initiative is the structured assessment of rehabilitation costs, compelling mining firms to establish closure bonds. These funds are intended to ensure that the government can address any necessary repairs should companies neglect their obligations. The EPA is actively monitoring compliance with these new standards, underscoring that this proactive approach not only safeguards the environment but also yields long-term benefits for local communities and the broader nation.
