In a recent event dedicated to raising awareness about autism, Bangay Kanu, the Deputy Director of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services, called on families to embrace and provide support for their relatives with autism, despite the societal discrimination and marginalization they often face.

Mr. Kanu’s remarks come in light of the increasing number of autism cases reported to the Ministry of Social Welfare. He expressed concern over the troubling trend of parents abandoning their children with autism, which has led to the need for placement in interim care facilities.

“We are fully aware of the challenges faced by people affected by autism in society,” Mr. Kanu stated during his opening address. He emphasized the critical role of the Disability Commission in enforcing the Persons with Disability Act, while underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to advancing the human rights of individuals living with disabilities.

The Deputy Director highlighted ongoing collaborations between the Ministry and various external partners, including Non-Governmental Organizations and Civil Society Organizations, to address the pressing issues encountered by autistic individuals. “We collaborate with our external actors to ensure these issues are addressed,” he affirmed.

Stressing the importance of a supportive home environment, Mr. Kanu noted, “The best environment for someone with autism is community. Therefore, we encourage situations where autistic patients live with their family members.” He acknowledged the societal discrimination and marginalization that both families and patients often encounter.

Furthermore, Mr. Kanu pointed out the lack of a dedicated interim care facility for autistic patients, indicating that many currently seek medical attention at facilities such as the Kissi Psychiatric Teaching Hospital.

In conclusion, Mr. Kanu assured the public of the Ministry’s continued collaboration with stakeholders to develop effective solutions and address the challenges faced by individuals with autism.
