Masiaka, August 27, 2025 – Foday Kanu, a local farmer from Bathlol village in the Koya Chiefdom of Port Loko District, has been sentenced to six months in prison for unlawfully possessing a shotgun without the required authorization.
Kanu was apprehended on August 24, 2025, at the Bo Road Checkpoint in Masiaka, where authorities discovered the firearm in his possession. Following his arrest, he was brought before Magistrate Harold Kamara on August 27, charged under Section 11 (1) of the Arms and Ammunition Act No. 9 of 2012.
During the court proceedings, Kanu pleaded guilty and requested leniency, highlighting that he was a first-time offender and assured the court of his commitment to abide by the law in the future. However, Magistrate Kamara, citing the severity of the offense and the potential threat to community safety, imposed a sentence of six months’ imprisonment or an option to pay a fine of One Thousand Leones (NLE 1,000).
In delivering the verdict, Magistrate Kamara underscored the importance of deterring unlawful possession of firearms to foster peace and security within the community. He noted the increasing prevalence of such offenses and affirmed that the court’s decision aims to discourage similar conduct among the populace.
