Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, has announced the arrival of 61,300 doses of the MVA-BN Mpox vaccines, marking a pivotal step in the country’s efforts to combat the disease.
This allocation was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Africa CDC, CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF, WHO, and other global health partners. Sierra Leone is among twelve countries to receive these vaccines, which will be prioritized for healthcare workers, vulnerable communities, and areas prone to outbreaks.
In his remarks, Dr. Demby emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to contain Mpox and prevent further outbreaks. The vaccines are recommended for individuals aged 12 and above.
On January 13, the government declared Mpox a public health emergency, implementing a range of measures to control and ultimately end the outbreak in the country. The arrival of these vaccines is viewed as a significant advancement in the ongoing battle against the disease.
