Freetown City Council Implements New Sanitation Bylaws to Enhance Garbage Management

By Saidu Jalloh, Reporter

The Freetown City Council (FCC) is set to enforce new sanitation bylaws designed to improve garbage management throughout the city. Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr announced that the laws have come into effect after passing through Parliament unopposed for the required 21-day period.

Under the new regulations, every resident must register with approved waste vendors for a fee. In remote areas, community garbage cans will be provided. Those who fail to comply will face a fine of 5,000 New Leones. To bolster enforcement efforts, the FCC plans to hire an additional 50 Metropolitan Police officers and will launch a public awareness campaign about the bylaws.

“The waste service providers have entered a bidding process and will be delivering services on a block level,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr noted. “The fine for non-registration is set at 5,000 New Leones. The FCC is committed to recruiting 50 more Metropolitan Police officers, focusing on enforcing these bylaws.”

During a visit by Mark Watts, Executive Director of C40 Cities, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr further elaborated on the network’s involvement in climate measures. These include financial and technical assistance for a proposed cable car project and the successful “Freetown” reforestation campaign.

Watts commended the Freetown City Council’s initiatives and emphasized C40’s commitment to assisting cities in developing sustainable infrastructure and addressing climate change challenges.
