Freetown’s Mayor Celebrates Milestone in Female Leadership at Namibia’s Inauguration

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr recently attended the historic inauguration of H.E. Dr. Cde. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who has made history as Namibia’s first female president. The ceremony took place on Saturday, March 22, 2025, marking a significant milestone for female leadership in Africa.

In a heartfelt message shared on her social media, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr reflected on the momentous occasion, stating, “History was made, and I am so grateful that I was able to witness it.” She described the event as “incredibly poignant, moving, and inspirational,” underscoring the importance of this achievement for women across the continent.

As part of her commitment to empowering female leaders, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted her honor in attending the ceremony alongside H. E. Mdme Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the former President of Liberia and a renowned Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Johnson Sirleaf is also the founder of the Amujae Leadership program, which aims to inspire and support women in leadership roles.

During the inauguration, President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the vital role women play in the social and economic development of nations, stating, “It is not good to underplay the role that one segment of the population can play… I believe that my being elected as President will inspire many women and girls.”

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed her agreement with the new President’s vision and shared her motivation gleaned from this groundbreaking event, reinforcing the message of empowerment for women leaders.
