The Global Mercy, operated by the international charity Mercy Ships, has returned to Sierra Leone for a ten-month mission aimed at enhancing surgical care and medical training in the country.

After a brief maintenance period in Cádiz, Spain, the hospital ship is set to collaborate with national and local health authorities to provide free surgeries and training for Sierra Leonean health professionals. This marks the third visit of Mercy Ships to Sierra Leone, underscoring its commitment to supporting the nation’s healthcare needs.

During its stay, the medical team aboard the Global Mercy will focus on delivering essential surgical services while also implementing training programs designed to bolster local skills in areas such as surgery and patient care. According to the Ministry of Health, this initiative aligns with two critical objectives: addressing immediate medical needs through direct surgical interventions and equipping local health workers with the expertise to sustain these services in the future.

The government has expressed its gratitude for the return of the Global Mercy, recognizing the partnership as a significant contributor to the enhancement of health services in Sierra Leone. Since commencing operations in 2023, Mercy Ships has performed over 3,630 free surgeries for 3,240 individuals, covering a variety of surgical specialties. Each surgery represents a vital opportunity for patients who would otherwise lack access to necessary medical treatment.

In addition to surgical services, Mercy Ships offers various training and support initiatives through its Education, Training, and Advocacy (ETA) program. These efforts are aimed at strengthening the surgical systems within the country by improving knowledge, skills, and resources across hospitals and clinics.

The Global Mercy will continue its operations in Freetown until 2026, during which time the team plans to engage closely with medical institutions and community partners to foster long-term improvements in healthcare delivery throughout Sierra Leone.
