A 55-year-old gold mineral dealer, Abdulrahman Kuyateh, was discovered dead in a bush area known as the Captured Life Old Mining Site in Kumao Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District, on Saturday, June 14, 2025. The body was found at approximately 7:00 a.m. by local authorities.

According to Thompson Peter Ndapi, Media Officer at the Police Divisional Headquarters, Kuyateh was lying face-up with visible maggot infestation and apparent wounds to his left eye and right arm. He was dressed in faded jeans and black crepe shoes, and nearby, a black cloth and a wristwatch stained with blood were located.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Kuyateh, who had previously resided in Kumao Town and was actively engaged in gold trading at the One Bone Mining Site, may have died under suspicious circumstances. The official cause of death is pending a postmortem examination.

Inspector Khanu, Officer Commanding at the Kumao Police Post, promptly informed Detective Deputy Superintendent of Police (D/DSP) Songu Sylvanus, the Divisional Crime Officer at Motema. D/DSP Sylvanus quickly mobilized a team of officers to the scene, where they documented the crime scene for evidential purposes.

The police have obtained statements from two of Kuyateh’s associates, Mohamed Thorley and Alpha Tarawalie. They reported that Kuyateh received a phone call days before his death, during which he informed Thorley that he was going to meet a customer related to his gold business. He subsequently left the site and did not return.

The Sierra Leone Police have launched a full investigation into the incident, treating it as a suspected murder. Kuyateh’s remains have been transferred to the Koidu Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
