On 12th August 2025, an Inter-Ministerial assessment for the redemarcation of the Western Area Peninsula was conducted under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh. The assessment involved various key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, notably including the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, represented by Permanent Secretary Ms. Judith Jones, Director of Tourism, Travel and Exchange Mohamed Jalloh, and General Manager of the National Tourist Board, Madam Fatmata Mida Carew.
Other ministries participating in the assessment included the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Lands, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, and the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, along with representatives from Guma Valley Water Company.
The delegation visited significant locations such as Guma, Mile 13, Bio Baray, and Comfort Bridge. It was decided that existing settlements within the newly demarcated areas would remain intact; however, residents will be required to pay fees to the government.
During the assessment, the tourism team identified Comfort Bridge as a potential site for tourism development, highlighting its value for attracting visitors.
Additionally, the assessment reaffirmed the government’s stance on prohibiting new settlements in park areas, part of a broader strategy to enhance environmental protection and ensure public safety.
This initiative marks a critical step in the government’s ongoing commitment to sustainable land use and environmental conservation in the Western Area Peninsula.
