Freetown, Sierra Leone The government has officially launched its National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP), a comprehensive initiative aimed at revolutionizing surgical healthcare and saving lives nationwide. The plan was introduced last week by Honourable Minister of Health, Austin Demby, PhD, MPH, in Freetown, and its significance was further emphasized at the 3rd Pan African Surgical Healthcare Forum (PASHeF) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Dr. Mustapha Kabba, Deputy Chief Medical Officer overseeing clinical services, represented the Minister at the forum, where he presented the NSOAP to an audience of pan-African healthcare leaders. “At the heart of the NSOAP is the aim to move beyond mere statistics and focus on the profound impact on the lives of ordinary citizens,” Dr. Kabba articulated, conveying the Minister’s core message.
This marks the first national strategy of its kind, providing a comprehensive framework for enhancing surgical, emergency, and critical care across the country. The launch in Freetown signifies a historic commitment from the government to prioritize surgical care within the universal health coverage agenda.
The NSOAP is designed to address critical gaps in healthcare infrastructure, human resources, medical equipment, and access to affordable surgical services. These improvements are essential for effectively managing a range of medical needs, from treating injuries and complications during childbirth to addressing acute infections.
The presentation at the PASHeF forum positions the nation as a leader among African countries in adopting integrated strategies to strengthen surgical systems, reinforcing the importance of effective public healthcare.
