Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, recently met with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to enhance collaboration in response to the rising Mpox cases in the country.

The meeting comes as Sierra Leone reports 1,409 active Mpox cases, with new infections continuing to emerge daily.

During their discussion, the leaders focused on strategies to secure additional vaccines to curb the spread of Mpox. They emphasized the necessity for stronger cooperation between Sierra Leone’s health ministry and WHO to effectively manage the outbreak. Efforts are underway to increase vaccine availability to contain Mpox and protect public health.

Since the first confirmed case in January 2025, Sierra Leone has recorded a total of 3,140 cases as of May 26, including 1,432 active cases, 1,693 recoveries, and 15 deaths. The government urges citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to public health guidelines to prevent contracting the disease.
