Heavy Rainfall Alert: NDMA Warns Sierra Leoneans to Prepare for Severe Weather

By Joseph Momoh, Reporter D.S.

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a critical public advisory in response to forecasts from the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), predicting heavy rainfall across the country over the next three days, from September 12 to 14, 2025.

This warning follows observations from SLMet indicating that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to affect several regions, particularly the Western Area, as well as the Northern, Southern, and Eastern regions of Sierra Leone. Residents are urged to remain alert, as these weather conditions may lead to various hazards, including poor visibility, slippery road surfaces, flooding in vulnerable low-lying areas, and disruptions to daily activities.

To mitigate risks, the NDMA and SLMet recommend several precautionary measures for the public. Motorists and road users are advised to exercise extreme caution while traveling. Residents living in flood-prone areas should stay vigilant and consider relocating to safer grounds if necessary.

It is crucial for citizens to stay informed by following official weather updates and advisories from SLMet and NDMA. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to clean drainage systems to help reduce the likelihood of flooding. Parents and guardians should closely monitor children and prevent them from playing in flooded areas.

The NDMA and SLMet emphasize that this is an early warning, underscoring the importance of vigilance and prioritizing safety for all citizens during this period of adverse weather.
