On Monday, October 14, 2024, a high-level delegation of international moral guarantors, co-led by former Gambian Vice President Her Excellency Fatoumata Jalloh-Tambajang and United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (UNSRSG) His Excellency Leonardo Santo Simao, arrived in Freetown.
The mission aims to oversee the continued implementation of Sierra Leone’s National Unity Agreement, a crucial framework for fostering peace and political stability in the country.
This visit is part of ongoing efforts to support the consolidation of peace, democratic governance, and national cohesion following a period of political transition in Sierra Leone. The Joint Follow-up Mission will engage with key government officials, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to assess progress and address challenges in implementing the agreement.
Upon arrival, HE Fatoumata Jalloh-Tambajang emphasized the importance of a collective commitment to national unity and lasting peace, stating, “Sierra Leone has made significant strides, but the path to sustainable peace requires continued dialogue, cooperation, and action.” UNSRSG Leonardo Santo Simao echoed this sentiment, highlighting the international community’s unwavering support for the peace process.
The mission will conduct a series of consultations and field visits to gather insights on the current state of national unity, reconciliation, and development initiatives under the agreement. Their findings and recommendations are expected to be shared with relevant parties, ensuring continued momentum in Sierra Leone’s peacebuilding efforts.
