The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has released a damning report on human rights violations by law enforcement officers between 2015 and 2021. The report, presented at a press conference, highlights widespread abuses and orders significant compensation for victims.

The inquiry process, which began in 2022, collected 178 complaints, with 133 deemed admissible. Hearings were held in various regions, focusing on cases involving excessive use of force, injuries, loss of life, and property damage.

The commission found numerous instances of rights violations by law enforcement, resulting in orders for the Sierra Leone Police to pay Le 35.001 million and the Armed Forces Le 1.70 million to compensate victims. The law enforcement agencies have 21 days to comply with the payment orders.

The release of this report marks a significant step towards accountability and justice for victims of human rights violations in Sierra Leone.
