In a significant move to tackle corruption, two Immigration Department employees, Alpha Brima Timbo and Clifford Bola Thomas, are facing trial for misappropriating public revenue. The duo, attached to the Intelligence and Investigation Unit, allegedly diverted funds meant for the department into their personal accounts.
According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the allegations stem from incidents in February 2024. Timbo is accused of issuing residence permits to four foreign nationals – three Lebanese citizens and one Cuban national – and pocketing the fees totaling NLe 20,000. Thomas allegedly issued a residence permit to a Tanzanian national employed by the UNFPA and received NLe 10,000 for his role.
Investigations revealed that none of the collected fees were deposited into the Immigration Department Treasury Account, as required by law. Both officers face charges under the Anti-Corruption Act of 2019 (amended), which criminalizes the misappropriation of public funds.
The trial, presided over by Justice Semion Aiah Alie, commenced today, September 24, 2024. The nation awaits the verdict, eager to see accountability in action.
