In an exciting announcement that signals a commitment to innovation and sustainable development, the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation has unveiled the five finalists for the Big Five Innovation Investment Challenge. This initiative aims to foster groundbreaking solutions to some of the most pressing national issues.
The announcement was made at an event dedicated to showcasing innovative projects, where the finalists were celebrated for their creative approaches. These innovators are now set to compete for a share of $60,000 in seed funding at the Sierra Leone Innovates: Digital Government Summit 2025. The prize money will be awarded to the top three winners, providing them with the resources to further develop their ideas.
The finalists include:
- Mocha, a blockchain-powered solution that facilitates cross-border payments via WhatsApp, aimed at enhancing financial inclusion.
- Cassavity SL Ltd, which focuses on producing high-quality cassava-based flour to reduce post-harvest losses and reliance on imported flour.
- Solar Agric System, offering solar-powered crop drying and storage technologies to minimize post-harvest losses in agriculture.
- Water Light Oswald Tech Company (SL) Ltd, a venture developing clean electricity generation from seawater to provide power to off-grid communities.
- Insect-Based Organic Fertilizer, a project that transforms organic waste into valuable fertilizer and livestock feed using black soldier fly larvae.
The Ministry emphasized that these innovative projects reflect a strong dedication to utilizing technology for sustainable progress. As the summit approaches, it is expected to serve as a vital platform for these entrepreneurs to present their ideas, network with industry leaders, and contribute significantly to the nation’s advancement.
