On February 17, 2025, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Justice, Hon. Alpha Sesay, addressed a gathering of environmental lawyers, experts, and activists from across Africa at the weeklong Environmental and Natural Resources Rights and Protection conference.

In his opening remarks, Sesay emphasized that the protection of environmental and natural resources rights is fundamentally a human rights issue, necessitating the collective commitment of diverse stakeholders. He highlighted the significance of these discussions, particularly as Sierra Leone embarks on a comprehensive reform process.

Sesay asserted that through these reforms, the government aims to empower citizens legally, enabling them to assert their rights, including their environmental rights.
