Sierra Leonean hip-hop artist Amara Dennis Turay, widely known as Kao Denero, issued a public apology to fellow musician Frederick Dapaye Peters, known as Famous, during a court hearing on August 28, 2025. This statement came after the two artists reached a $5,000 settlement related to an altercation that occurred on February 22 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown.
The incident reportedly involved associates of Kao Denero and the alleged disappearance of $7,000. Famous’s attorney, Madieu Sesay, confirmed that the settlement was facilitated by a prominent political figure, aiming to resolve the dispute amicably.
While taking the stand at Pademba Road Court No. 4, Magistrate Adama Kandeh presided over the case. Kao Denero described the altercation as “unfortunate,” emphasizing that he had no violent intentions. He expressed deep regret for the fallout and appealed for reconciliation between the two camps, highlighting the close relationship he once shared with Famous.
In response, Famous’s lawyer acknowledged the apology but noted that the dispute also pertained to issues of dignity and public image. Sesay indicated that his client preferred to avoid unnecessary publicity and was open to finding a resolution that would benefit both parties.
Magistrate Kandeh chose not to mandate a public apology, citing concerns regarding Kao Denero’s mental health. She urged both artists to act responsibly, reminding them of their influence as public figures in Sierra Leone. The magistrate emphasized that Kao, in his role as an entertainment ambassador, should exemplify peace and leadership within the music industry.
The case has been adjourned until September 10, 2025, with future proceedings expected to take place in private. The entertainment community and fans are closely monitoring the situation, as its resolution could significantly impact the relationship between the two artists and the broader landscape of leadership and unity in Sierra Leone’s creative sector.
