Karpowership Demands 30% Payment to Restore Power

Karpowership has announced its intention to restore full electricity supply to Sierra Leone, contingent upon the settlement of 30% of the country’s outstanding bills. In an interview with Global Times, Emre Durmusoglu, Karpowership’s Commercial Operations Director, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s energy needs since 2018.

Durmusoglu praised the hospitality and community spirit in Sierra Leone, describing his collaboration with local authorities as both meaningful and positive. Karpowership operates a floating power plant, known as a Powership, which supplies electricity directly to the national grid and plays a crucial role in the country’s energy infrastructure.

Acknowledging the financial difficulties faced by Sierra Leone, Durmusoglu noted that Karpowership has worked diligently with government officials over the past six months to establish flexible payment plans. The company has also reduced its contracted capacity from 100MW to 50MW at the government’s request. However, ongoing delays in payments and increasing operational and fuel costs have placed Karpowership in a difficult financial situation, prompting the issuance of a suspension notice on May 28, 2025.

To resume full service, Karpowership is requesting the settlement of 30% of the outstanding amount under its contract. Despite the suspension, the company will continue to provide 6MW of power to essential services, including hospitals, schools, and water pumps.

Durmusoglu reiterated Karpowership’s commitment to its partner countries and expressed hope for a constructive resolution. The company stands ready to restore full service immediately upon reaching an acceptable agreement.
