Koinadugu, Sierra Leone March 10, 2026: Francis Ben Kaifala, the People’s Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), delivered a compelling message to the ten Paramount Chiefs of Koinadugu District during a recent engagement at the District Council Hall. This meeting was part of the Commissioner’s “Meet the People Tour,” aimed at strengthening partnerships with traditional authorities to foster integrity and accountability at the grassroots level.

In his address, Commissioner Kaifala urged the Chiefs to actively cultivate and protect the values of integrity and patriotism within their communities. He underscored the critical role traditional leaders play in influencing governance and ethical leadership.

“You are the custodians of governance in your chiefdoms and the trust of your people. Your role is essential in sustaining our national anti-corruption efforts,” he stated, recognizing the significant responsibilities borne by Chiefs amid challenging circumstances.

Kaifala expressed his commitment to engaging with traditional leaders directly, highlighting the respect afforded to them as vital allies in the anti-corruption campaign. The purpose of these discussions is to clarify the legal framework surrounding anti-corruption measures, thereby enhancing the Chiefs’ understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

Using practical examples, the Commissioner elaborated on the legal guidelines governing gifts and the biannual asset declaration requirements stipulated in the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008. He emphasized compliance with these provisions, which are designed to protect public officials, including traditional leaders.

“There are no laws preventing public officers, including Chiefs, from receiving or giving gifts. However, safeguards are necessary to prevent the abuse of such gestures and to avoid conflicts of interest,” he explained. Kaifala further clarified that asset declarations are intended to ensure transparency and accountability, not to restrict legitimate economic activities.

Commending the Commissioner’s efforts, Hon. PC Alie Bala Marah III, the Paramount Chief Member of Parliament for Koinadugu, welcomed the ACC delegation and expressed gratitude for the recognition of traditional leadership’s role. He affirmed the Chiefs’ commitment to supporting the anti-corruption campaign, which he described as essential for the nation’s progress.

This sentiment was echoed by Hon. PC Foday Jalloh III, Chairman of the Council of Paramount Chiefs, and other attendees who shared their support for the initiative.

The engagement concluded with a dynamic interactive session, where Chiefs posed questions and provided reflections, fostering a robust dialogue aimed at enhancing collaboration between the ACC and traditional leadership in the ongoing fight against corruption.
