Kpanguma and Bandajuma: New Districts Announced in Sierra Leone Amid Political Controversy

By Joseph Momoh, Daily Scope

In a recent press conference held by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamaba Lamaina, announced plans to create two new districts, Kpanguma and Bandajuma. This initiative aims to enhance administrative efficiency, with Freetown set to gain two new administrative councils and the Western Rural area three.

Minister Lamaina highlighted the anticipated benefits of this redistricting initiative, which is part of the revised Local Government Act of 2022. He noted that while the constitution empowers the president to create new localities and councils, President Bio is actively engaging stakeholders to ensure a participatory approach.

The government’s proposal to expand the number of districts to 18 is positioned as a means to improve infrastructure, governance, and service delivery across the country. However, the move has faced criticism from the opposition.

In a statement released in May 2025, the All People’s Congress (APC) condemned the creation of Kpanguma and Bandajuma, labeling it as a politically motivated maneuver. The party expressed its commitment to opposing what it views as attempts by the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to manipulate the nation’s administrative and electoral frameworks under the guise of development.
