The Ministry of Lands in Sierra Leone has successfully secured $20 million from Shelter Afrique to enhance access to affordable housing for the populace.
This funding will establish a new mortgage credit line through the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank (SLCB), aimed at assisting more individuals in purchasing their homes. Additionally, the agreement includes provisions to empower the Sierra Leone Housing Corporation (SALHOC) in the creation and management of social housing projects catering to low and middle-income families.
The collaboration emerged following discussions between the Ministry and Shelter Afrique, highlighted by the Minister’s recent participation in the organization’s Annual General Meeting in Algeria.
In a significant development, Shelter Afrique has appointed Dr. Turad Senesie, the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, to chair the Technical Committee of the ECOWAS Housing Ministers. Dr. Senesie expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “Housing for all Sierra Leoneans is a fundamental aspect of our governance agenda. The SLCB mortgage line and the revitalization of SALHOC will translate policy into action, broadening access to affordable financing and reinforcing social housing for lower and middle-income families.”
The Ministry asserts that this initiative aligns with its mission to provide safe and affordable housing options across the country, facilitated through partnerships with international organizations and local financial institutions.
