Lawyer Basita Michael Calls for Unity and Disciplined Discourse Amid Falaba Border Tensions

In light of a recent cross-border incident involving Guinean troops detaining Sierra Leonean soldiers and Operational Support Division (OSD) officers, prominent Sierra Leonean lawyer Basita Michael has urged for a more mature and unified national discourse.

Michael reacted to the government’s official communication regarding the incident in Falaba, praising its measured and diplomatic tone. “The government’s update on the border situation is calm, appropriate, and responsible,” she stated, noting that such restraint is crucial in preventing escalation during tense moments.

Following reports of Guinean forces entering Sierra Leonean territory, concerns have arisen over border security and the diplomatic relations between the two nations. The government has committed to engaging with its neighbors through diplomatic channels.

While acknowledging the government’s commendable approach on the international front, Michael pointed out a concerning trend in domestic politics. “When dealing with other countries, we instinctively choose caution and maturity. Yet, in our local political discussions, we often resort to hostility that we would not tolerate in international affairs,” she said.

Michael emphasized that the discipline displayed in international communication should extend to local political discussions, arguing that a shift in tone could significantly enhance national unity. “If we applied the same sense of responsibility in our political conversations at home, our national life would transform,” she remarked. “We would be able to disagree without demeaning, debate without threatening, and uphold our dignity without tearing each other down.”

With the situation surrounding the detained personnel ongoing, she stressed the critical importance of national unity. “In times like these, when our soldiers are taken across the border, it is essential that we maintain a serious, unifying tone. Their safe and unconditional return should be our foremost priority.”

Michael’s comments highlight the need for both diplomatic prudence and a respectful domestic political atmosphere as Sierra Leone confronts these challenges.
