The Government, through the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), has issued an official press release mandating the registration of all Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, in the country. The SLCAA emphasizes that all drone owners and operators must register their drones and obtain the appropriate licenses or permissions to operate within Sierra Leonean airspace.
In the announcement, the SLCAA detailed the application process for drone operators, requiring specific information such as the operator’s name, address, and contact number; location of the proposed operation, date, time, duration, and the maximum height Above Ground Level (AGL) for the flight. To facilitate compliance, the Authority encourages drone owners to contact SLCAA headquarters at 21/23 Siaka Stevens Street, Freetown, or via email at info@slcaa.gov.sl. The SLCAA warns that failure to adhere to these regulations could lead to the confiscation of drones or legal prosecution.
As part of the initiative, the SLCAA has reiterated the existence of No-Fly zones to protect sensitive areas across the country. These restricted zones include the residences and offices of the President and Vice President, government buildings, military barracks, and all airports and airstrips. Special permission is required to operate drones in or around these areas. This regulatory move aims to ensure public safety and national security while providing clear operational guidelines for drone enthusiasts and professionals alike.
