Accra, Ghana — Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr recently met with World Bank officials at their Accra office to discuss ongoing and prospective support for urban development in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The meeting included Robert O’Brien, the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, along with Madhu Raghunath, the Country Practice Manager for Urban Development, Resilience, and Land Global Practice.
During the discussions, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted the urgent need for enhanced support to local councils in tackling the challenges brought about by rapid urbanization. O’Brien shared the Bank’s vision to amplify impact and outcomes across its programs.
Both parties committed to continuing their collaboration on existing World Bank projects with the Freetown City Council (FCC) and explored new avenues for intervention aimed at enhancing urban development and governance.
The Mayor characterized the meeting as a productive dialogue that reinforced a mutual commitment to improving the lives and livelihoods of the residents of Freetown.
