Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, along with her deputy, Kweku Lisk Esq, and senior staff from the Freetown City Council, welcomed mayors and vice governors from across Africa on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, for the inaugural African Urban Heat Summit.
Delegates from Kanifing, Monrovia, Conakry, Accra, Ouagadougou, and Abidjan attended the event, which also featured representatives from Climate Resilience for All (CRA), co-hosts of the summit, as well as the CEO of the Quadrature Foundation and a senior member of C40 Cities.
The official welcome included an inspection of a guard of honor by the Freetown City Council Metropolitan Police. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Chief Administrator presented the visiting officials with the “Key to Freetown,” symbolizing the city’s commitment to regional collaboration and partnership.
The summit, scheduled for February 6, 2025, aims to address urgent solutions and financing needed to combat the escalating threat of extreme heat and its impacts on urban areas. It will bring together local government leaders from Sierra Leone, development partners, multilateral organizations, and key climate stakeholders.
