The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has delivered a substantial donation of 27,369 bags of rice to partners participating in the Homegrown School Feeding Programme. The official handover ceremony took place in the ministry’s conference room in Freetown.
This donation includes 20,369 bags from the Chinese government and 7,000 bags, equivalent to 350 metric tons, from ECOWAS. Of the rice received from China, 40% will be allocated to Plan International, another 40% to Women United for Progress, and the remaining 20% to the World Food Programme. From the ECOWAS contribution, 100 bags will support boarding homes, while the remaining 6,900 bags will be evenly distributed between Plan International and Women United for Progress.
MBSSE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with its partners to facilitate the distribution of these bags in support of the National School Feeding Program. Minister Conrad Sackey assured the public that a robust monitoring system has been established to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process. He highlighted the involvement of the Internal Auditor, Civil Society Organizations, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the media to guarantee that each bag reaches its intended beneficiaries.
“School feeding is a critical pillar of our education agenda. When we nourish a child, we enhance their attendance, concentration, and overall performance in school,” Minister Sackey stated. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with partners to ensure that no learner is left behind.
