On February 10, 2025, the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Mrs. Nabeela Farida Tunis, officially launched a week-long Tourism Statistics Training workshop at the Bintumani Hotel Conference Hall. The initiative, supported by the World Bank’s Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP), aims to enhance the skills of tourism professionals from both public and private sectors in effective data collection, particularly through the establishment of Tourism Satellite Accounts.

In her keynote address, Minister Tunis acknowledged the achievements of the tourism sector but underscored the negative impact of poor statistical management, which can obscure progress and hinder support for tourism initiatives. She emphasized that the training would act as a catalyst for improved measurement of the Ministry’s efforts, informing policy-making and enhancing data collection at both sectoral and national levels.

The training program will introduce various innovative data collection techniques tailored to the local tourism context. Topics will include measuring tourism, global best practices, understanding diverse tourist demographics, and developing comprehensive survey questionnaires. The Ministry and its agencies are committed to establishing a robust data management system, recognizing that accurate data collection is essential for the sustainable development of tourism in Sierra Leone.
