The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs has expressed profound grief over the tragic death of a two-year-old girl in Normiyama Village, Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District, following an alleged sexual assault.

On October 25, 2025, the child was admitted to Moyamba Government Hospital for treatment of suspected malaria. However, during a medical examination, staff discovered severe bleeding and swelling in her genital and anal areas, raising immediate concerns of potential sexual violence. Unfortunately, the child succumbed to her injuries the following morning.

In accordance with established protocols for addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police, has transferred the child’s remains to Freetown for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. The deceased has since been laid to rest.

A joint investigative team comprised of officials from the Ministry, the Family Support Unit (FSU), and civil society organizations has visited Normiyama Village to collect further information regarding the incident. Authorities have arrested six individuals who are currently aiding the ongoing investigation.

Senior officials from the Ministry, including the Director of Children’s Affairs, were present during the autopsy process in Freetown. The findings of the autopsy have been submitted to the police to facilitate their inquiries.

The Minister emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with law enforcement, health authorities, community stakeholders, and families to ensure justice is served. In a statement, the Minister denounced all forms of violence against children and underscored the dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of every child in Sierra Leone.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family and assure the public that we are actively working with law enforcement and our partners across government and civil society to prevent violence and support survivors,” the statement concluded.
