The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has formalized its commitment to fostering civic engagement and academic collaboration through a recently signed memorandum of understanding with Fourah Bay College. This partnership represents a pivotal milestone for both institutions, reinforcing their dedication to advancing government communication, civic education, and the preservation of national heritage.
During the signing ceremony, Minister Chernor Bah expressed gratitude to Fourah Bay College’s leadership for their willingness to engage in this strategic partnership. He emphasized that the collaboration is a vital step toward enhancing public awareness of national issues and instilling a sense of civic responsibility, particularly among youth and students.
In attendance was Professor Kelleh Gbawuru-Mansaray, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, who commended the Minister for extending this partnership to the nation’s oldest university. He noted that Fourah Bay College has a rich history of producing distinguished professionals, several of whom were present at the event. The Professor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to achieving the objectives outlined in the memorandum, which includes cooperation in government communication through the Department of Mass Communication, fostering national history and civic awareness via the Department of History and Political Science, and ensuring the preservation of government archives alongside the Department of Library Archive and Information Studies.
Professor Gbawuru-Mansaray welcomed the partnership, highlighting the university’s eagerness to implement the agreement through impactful initiatives. He also noted Fourah Bay College’s successful track record in fostering partnerships and expressed optimism that this new collaboration would yield fruitful outcomes based on shared goals.
Minister Bah further elaborated that this partnership transcends local boundaries, citing ongoing collaborations with international entities such as New York University and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. These international alliances aim to elevate the quality and scope of civic initiatives in Sierra Leone.
As part of this agreement, the Ministry and the University will co-organize national civic events, with the inaugural activity being the upcoming Sierra Leone Independence Day celebration. Although the country officially commemorates its independence on April 27, a national commemorative event is scheduled for April 28 at the Fourah Bay College Amphitheatre, marking what is expected to be the first of many collaborative national engagements.
