The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP), has launched its Nature-Based Digital Ecotourism Training program in Kono District, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable tourism and capacity building.
The training took place at the District Council Hall and was chaired by Hilton Leigh, Assistant Director of Tourism, Travel and Exchange Program. Leigh highlighted the critical role of ecotourism in empowering local communities, safeguarding the environment, and promoting economic growth. Deputy Director of Tourism, Idrissa Bangura, elaborated on the program’s objectives, emphasizing the need for communities to embrace digital innovations, sustainable practices, and the promotion of their unique cultural assets.
Facilitators engaged participants on various topics, including content creation for Sierra Leone’s cultural and natural attractions, the tourism value chain, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable tourism practices. Attendees actively participated in discussions on how to utilize Kono’s rich history and attractions to enhance their ecotourism offerings.
Local chiefdom stakeholders expressed strong support for the initiative, pledging to work alongside the Ministry to promote ecotourism in their area. Participants also signed on to the Ministry’s 2025 Year of Ecotourism Campaign, reflecting their commitment to the initiative.
In addition to training, the MTCA team conducted field visits to important cultural and historical sites, including Love Garden (Kondayque Centre), Tomudu Village mass gravesite, the Savage Pit, Diamond Lodge, and Captain Lendy’s Colonial Gravesite in Waiyma. These excursions provided participants with deeper insights into Kono’s historical narratives and their potential for ecotourism.
Through these efforts, the Ministry aims to build local capacity and position Kono as a district that effectively integrates history, culture, and sustainability into its tourism development strategy.
