On May 15, 2025, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor Ramatulai Wurie, officially inaugurated Engineer Mohamed Alie Jalloh as the new Chancellor of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) during a ceremony at the Great Hall of the Goderich campus in Freetown. The event also marked the inauguration of the second University Court and its members, who will serve a three-year term from 2025 to 2028.
Professor Wurie congratulated the new Chancellor and the University Court members, commending the previous court for its role in the transition from a polytechnic to a technical university and for laying a solid foundation for future progress. She emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering centers of innovation and excellence, urging the new leadership to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
In his inaugural speech, Chancellor Jalloh expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and outlined his vision for the university. He highlighted his commitment to promoting globalization and inclusivity, supporting study tours, and establishing a Business Center to generate funds for the institution. Jalloh also emphasized the importance of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education at MMTU, focusing on hands-on experience and partnerships with industries.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Jalloh pledged to improve academic standards, build on MMTU’s legacy, and ensure that no student is left behind. He committed to producing graduates who can contribute to solutions for the country’s electricity crisis and extend MMTU’s reach across Sierra Leone.
Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor Philip John Kanu welcomed the new University Court, describing the event as a momentous occasion. He urged the court members to adhere to principles of accountable governance and to shape policies that will enhance the quality of education at MMTU, addressing the nation’s need for skilled manpower.
The event was attended by various legal representatives, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Madam Aminata Bangura, Dean of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Studies.
