The Ministry of Internal Affairs, under the leadership of AIG (Rtd) Morie Lengor Esq., has launched a strategic partnership with the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and INTERPOL to combat vehicle theft in the country.

This collaboration aims to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to prevent the registration of stolen vehicles in Sierra Leone. During a recent meeting, Minister Lengor emphasized the critical need to protect Sierra Leone’s international reputation, stating, “We cannot allow Sierra Leone to become a haven for stolen vehicles.”

He urged a unified approach among various ministries, departments, and agencies to dismantle the criminal networks that threaten national resources and tarnish the nation’s reputation.

Mr. James Baggie, Executive Director of the SLRSA, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to eradicating the illegal vehicle trade, highlighting its negative impact on the country’s image and revenue generation. “We are resolute in our mission to end this trade,” he asserted.

President Julius Maada Bio also stressed the importance of close cooperation with INTERPOL, declaring, “While I am in office, no stolen vehicles will be registered in Sierra Leone.” He called for ongoing joint efforts to deter those involved in vehicle theft.

Chief Superintendent of Police Jenevieve Tity Cowan commended President Bio for his initiatives since taking office and pledged her full support for the campaign against vehicle theft.

The meeting concluded with a caution regarding potential backlash from criminal elements as efforts to combat vehicle theft intensify. Both consignees and consignors involved in illegal activities will face repercussions, and both institutions were urged to prioritize accurate record-keeping to ensure the effectiveness of this essential initiative.
