Freetown, Sierra Leone – The National Election Watch (NEW) has officially signed a sub-grant agreement with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), facilitated by the European Union’s instruments for the Sierra Leone Democracy Strengthening Program. This significant partnership was formalized on June 11, 2025, with the aim of enhancing internal governance and decision-making processes within NEW.
The project, titled “Supporting the Implementation of the Tripartite Committee Recommendations and Institutional Democracy Strengthening of NEW,” focuses on bolstering NEW’s institutional internal democracy. It specifically targets the implementation of recommendations made by the Tripartite Committee and the Election Observer Mission (EOM) following the 2023 general elections.
The sub-grant, totaling €335,000, will be distributed to NEW along with its partners: Talking Drum Studio Salone, which leads the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the Independent Radio Network (IRN), and the Campaign for Human Rights and Development Initiative (CHRDI).
These organizations will work collaboratively to implement the 80 recommendations provided by the Tripartite Committee and the EOM. This collaboration is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and participatory governance within NEW, paving the way for improved democratic processes.
NEW expressed gratitude to the European Union and International IDEA for their continued support in promoting democracy and good governance.
