The Government of Sierra Leone has commenced a week-long training program aimed at establishing new sentencing guidelines for legal professionals. This initiative, spearheaded by Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay in collaboration with The Death Penalty Project, is designed to align sentencing practices with the recently enacted Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2022 and the Criminal Procedure Act 2024.
Since the abolition of capital punishment in 2022, Sierra Leone has shifted from mandatory death sentences to a judicial system that allows judges enhanced discretion in determining penalties. The training workshop focuses on equipping judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys with essential tools to ensure that sentences are proportional to the unique circumstances of each case.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to build the capacity of legal professionals, harmonize our laws, and reform our justice delivery system,” stated Sesay.
The Death Penalty Project, a London-based non-governmental organization, has been instrumental in supporting Sierra Leone’s transition away from capital punishment. Their efforts include providing research and technical assistance aimed at strengthening the country’s sentencing frameworks.
As the implementation of the Criminal Procedure Act 2024 continues across the nation, officials anticipate that the proposed sentencing guidelines will enhance consistency, fairness, and respect for fundamental human rights within the justice system.
