Sierra Leone’s Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, has unveiled a strategic plan to address the rising issue of dependency among young people, commonly referred to as the “Bra U Borbor Dae” syndrome.
Minister Sannoh emphasized the need to change the mindset that encourages reliance on handouts and connections rather than fostering skills and hard work. To combat this, he has introduced four key projects focused on agriculture, climate change policy, skill development, and digital literacy.
The Minister believes these initiatives will not only reduce unemployment but also empower young people to earn their own income and enhance productivity in the informal sector. He explained that upon completion of the projects, youth will be better equipped to create products and services that can attract foreign investment to the country.
Sannoh’s goal is to provide young people with the training necessary to contribute to national development and steer clear of criminal activity. He asserts that when equipped with the right tools, young individuals will move away from dependency and begin to construct their own futures.
