Nigerian Bar Association Strengthens Ties with Sierra Leone Judiciary

Freetown, Sierra Leone March 12, 2026: A high-level delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by esteemed lawyer Babatunde Ogala, recently visited the Hon. Chief Justice Komba Kamanda in Freetown. This engagement underscores a renewed commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and collaborative efforts between the legal communities of Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

The discussions highlighted critical issues such as the rule of law, necessary legal reforms, and the overall development of the legal profession in both nations. Mr. Ogala, who has four decades of legal experience, commended Chief Justice Kamanda for his leadership in nurturing justice and upholding democratic principles in Sierra Leone.

“The NBA aims to reinforce its partnership with the Sierra Leone Judiciary, recognizing our shared heritage and legal frameworks,” Mr. Ogala stated. He informed the Chief Justice that the NBA, which ranks as the fifth largest bar association globally, is comprised of over 250,000 legal practitioners and is home to a diverse pool of experienced judges.

During the meeting, Mr. Ogala extended a formal invitation for Chief Justice Kamanda to speak at the upcoming NBA Annual Conference, scheduled for August 2026. The event, themed “Beyond Limits,” will feature former Liberian President George Manneh Oppong Weah as the keynote speaker, whose own journey serves as an inspiring backdrop to the conference theme.

Chief Justice Kamanda expressed gratitude for the visit and praised the NBA’s commitment to promoting excellence within the legal profession. He emphasized that the dialogue fosters opportunities for knowledge exchange and professional collaboration.

The Chief Justice also addressed the pressing issue of law reporting in Sierra Leone, noting that a majority of court cases remain unreported. He welcomed potential initiatives aimed at building capacity among Judiciary support staff to enhance the quality of justice delivery in the country.

Regarding the conference invitation, Chief Justice Kamanda indicated his interest in participating and emphasized the importance of forging strategic partnerships in legal development.

Justice Alusine Sesay and Justice Fatmatta Bintu Alhadi echoed the sentiments of collaboration, discussing strategies to improve legal education and foster access to justice for citizens in both nations.

The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen ties and foster continued exchanges, aimed at reinforcing the rule of law and advancing justice across West Africa.
