NRA Chief Slams EDSA for Unpaid GST Millions

By Joseph Momoh, Staff Reporter

Jeneba Bangura, Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), has publicly criticized the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) for its ongoing failure to remit Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections. In a recent media briefing, Bangura highlighted that while GST is a pass-through tax that consumers pay on their electricity bills, the corresponding funds are not reaching the government.

Bangura expressed her frustration, stating that despite consistent communication with EDSA’s leadership, progress has been disappointing. “We are in communication with EDSA, but that is not yielding any results currently,” she remarked. She issued a stern warning that if necessary, she would seal EDSA’s office until all owed funds are remitted. However, she also conveyed her willingness to collaborate with the new leadership to find a resolution.

The NRA is under pressure to meet ambitious domestic revenue targets crucial for funding essential government services. Commissioner Bangura concluded by affirming that the priority remains clear: taxes collected from the public must be deposited to ensure the effective functioning of the state.
