At the recent Salone Civic Festival held at the Youyi Building in Freetown, National Revenue Authority (NRA) Commissioner General Jeneba J. Bangura presented a series of key tax reforms aimed at enhancing compliance, transparency, and service delivery.
During her address at the event organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), Mrs. Bangura underscored the critical role of tax education, particularly through the introduction of awareness programs in schools, which she views as a long-term strategy for fostering a culture of compliance among future generations.
Highlighting the ongoing digitalization of NRA systems, she noted that automation has significantly improved efficiency and transparency within revenue administration. Among the initiatives discussed were the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS), which facilitates automated payments for Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Goods and Services Tax (GST), along with enhancements in customs clearance processes. Mrs. Bangura also introduced the Non-Tax Payment Mobile App as a tool to simplify payment processes for users.
Despite these advancements, the Commissioner acknowledged certain operational challenges, including persistent issues with electricity and internet connectivity that impact service delivery. She called for fair and consistent taxation, encouraging taxpayers to fulfill their obligations for the benefit of national development.
Additionally, she urged businesses to effectively implement GST by using Electronic Cash Registers, emphasizing that compliance is vital for the country’s growth.
The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where the Commissioner General addressed a variety of concerns raised by festival attendees.
