The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) has engaged in a strategic dialogue with the Mano River Union (MRU) to advance regional cooperation in the sustainable management of transboundary water resources within the Mano River Basin. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the management of shared water resources.
The discussions centered on the operationalization of the Mano River Transboundary Water Basin Management Office, improved data sharing, climate resilience strategies, and aligning these efforts with NWRMA’s mandate in the National Water Policy. Officials highlighted that effectively managing transboundary water resources demands robust collaboration at both national and sub-regional levels, especially given the challenges posed by climate change and competing water uses.
Ambassador Simeon M. B. Moriba, Secretary General of the Mano River Union, reiterated the Union’s commitment to managing shared natural resources sustainably. He underscored the necessity of established implementation frameworks at the sub-regional level for successful transboundary water initiatives. Moriba emphasized that cooperation and mutual trust among member states are critical for achieving long-term water security and regional stability.
The engagement also highlighted the need to harmonize national water governance frameworks with regional strategies to ensure equitable access and environmental sustainability. NWRMA officials described this collaboration as a pivotal move towards strengthening regional water governance and enhancing shared objectives in water security and sustainable development.
This renewed partnership emphasizes NWRMA’s dedication to responsible and inclusive water management in Sierra Leone, while contributing to broader regional efforts to protect shared water resources for future generations.
